What it means
Grazioso is an Italian performance direction meaning “graceful” or “charming.” It asks for a delicate, light, and charming delivery in which movements seem soft and elegant.
Musical use
The marking is found especially in works of the Classical period and the rococo, where grace was a central ideal, and appears in slow as well as fast movements. It fixes neither tempo nor volume but points to a moderate to lively tempo, light articulation, and restrained dynamics.
Grazioso should be distinguished from dolce, which means a soft, sweet sound, and from leggiero, which mainly asks for light, fleeting playing. Grazioso stresses the charming and pleasing shape, not just the tone color.
Performance practice
Play grazioso with a light touch and soft transitions. Ornament sparingly and tastefully, form small, naturally breathing phrases, and avoid hard accents.
