Composers use sospirando at moments of grief, longing, or resignation, in singing as in instrumental music. Musically, the sigh motif often helps: a short, usually falling two-note step with the stress on the first note.
Sospirando should be distinguished from lamentoso or dolente, which generally mean lament and pain, whereas sospirando specifically traces the quiet, breathy sigh.
Performance practice
Shape falling turns with a soft touch and ease off volume and pressure slightly toward the end of the phrase. Use small pauses and minimal delays so the impression of catching a breath arises without tearing the flow.
