Franchezza is an Italian word for “frankness” or “boldness” and is used in the performance direction usually as “con franchezza,” that is, “with frankness.” It asks for an open, carefree, and self-assured delivery.
Musical use
The marking is rare and describes an attitude, not a volume or speed. It suits passages meant to be delivered fresh, direct, and without hesitation, such as a resolute theme or a cheekily entering figure. It stands close to terms such as risoluto or con brio.
Franchezza should be distinguished from feroce, which means wildness and violence, and from fanatico, which asks for a glowing, enthusiastic expression. Franchezza stays, for all its openness of expression, friendly and unaffected.
Performance practice
Play con franchezza without hesitation and without holding back: clear attack, distinct articulation, open tone. Avoid exaggeration; the effect comes from assurance and directness, not from loudness.
