Wind Band Music
Music for a wind band or wind ensemble.
What it means
Wind band music refers to music written or arranged for ensembles of woodwind and brass instruments, usually joined by percussion, with no string section. The range spans from small brass bands to large symphonic wind orchestras.
The term covers both the ensemble type itself and its associated repertoire, from traditional march and light entertainment music to specially composed symphonic works.
Musical use
Wind band music has a long tradition, especially in German-speaking and Central European regions, in local associations, town bands, and festive occasions such as parades or outdoor concerts. Alongside this, there is a distinct symphonic wind band repertoire comprising demanding original compositions and arrangements of orchestral works for wind band.
It should be distinguished from the symphony orchestra, centrally built around strings, and from purely military bands, which have a similar instrumentation but primarily serve a practical, ceremonial purpose.
Performance practice
When you play in a wind band, pay particular attention to intonation and balance between woodwinds and brass, since without strings each instrumental group is more exposed. Careful breath and embouchure management matters especially here, to sustain playing through longer programs.
