The redowa (Czech rejdovák) is a Bohemian dance in triple time and fairly fast tempo. It is danced in pairs and is related to the mazurka and the waltz. A variant, the rejdovačka, is in 2/4 time. Both are lively and spirited.
Musical use
In the 19th century the redowa was played as a ballroom dance across Europe, including Vienna and Paris, and used in suites and piano pieces. In Bohemian folk music it kept its place.
The redowa should be distinguished from the waltz, which turns more evenly, from the mazurka, which is a Polish dance, and from the polka, which is in duple time.
Performance practice
Play the redowa lively but danceable, with a clear accent in triple time. Pay attention to an even accent in the triple time and help the dancer with a firm, springy pulse.
