What it means
Mezza voce is an Italian performance direction meaning "with half voice". It calls for a subdued, restrained sound that remains supported. It originally concerns singing but is also applied to instruments. The abbreviation m. v. is sometimes found.
In the notation
In the score, mezza voce appears as text above or below the staff. There is no sign for it; the abbreviation m. v. is rare.
Musical use
The direction is found in operatic roles and songs, but also in piano and orchestral pieces. It asks for a volume between quiet and normal, but above all for a certain character of sound: relaxed, soft, not strained. It should be distinguished from sotto voce, meaning "under the voice", which is meant to be quieter, more confidential, almost whispered.
Performance practice
Sing mezza voce with supported breathing but without pressure. Take care that the tone does not become flat or breathy. On instruments you play with a soft touch or a light bow.
