Kammersänger, in the female form Kammersängerin, is an honorary title for outstanding opera and concert singers. It is awarded mainly in German-speaking countries by state or municipal bodies to artists who have distinguished themselves through long-standing, outstanding achievement.
Musical use
The title historically goes back to courtly honorary designations with which princely courts distinguished especially valued musicians, and was later adopted by states, federal states, or cities to honour singers at a particular opera house or in a region. The award is not tied to a fixed age limit but usually presupposes a long, recognised artistic career.
Kammersänger should be distinguished from academic or pedagogical titles such as professor, which recognise teaching activity, and from general designations such as opera singer or concert singer, which describe only the profession without any special honour.
Performance practice
When reading a concert program or an opera cast list, you recognise from the title Kammersänger or Kammersängerin that the person has received special artistic recognition. The title, however, says nothing about the current program or voice type but honours the whole career.
