What it means
Feroce is an Italian performance direction meaning “wild” or “fierce.” It asks for an untamed, powerful, and unyielding expression with sharp articulation and high inner pressure.
Musical use
The marking stands at passages meant to portray violence, anger, or determination and is found above all in dramatic music of the 19th and 20th centuries. It does not fix tempo and volume exactly but demands a resolute, often loud and rhythmically sharp delivery.
Feroce should be distinguished from furioso, which stresses a wrathful, raging character, and from con fuoco, which means more fire and glow than wildness. Feroce highlights the rough and untamed.
Performance practice
