What it means
Andächtig is a German performance marking and calls for a performance of inner collectedness: calm, concentrated, without outward effect. In substance it corresponds to the Italian religioso or devoto.
Like all character words, it describes an attitude that shows itself in several means: a calm tempo without pressing, even dynamics in the middle to quiet range, slurred lines, sparing shaping. It is precisely the renunciation of striking means that belongs to the intended expression.
From gelassen and tranquillo, which mean calm in the sense of relaxation, andächtig differs through its earnestness; from religioso scarcely, except that the latter points more strongly to the church context.
In the notation
The word stands above the staff at the beginning of a movement or section, in German-language editions in place of an Italian marking. It can become part of the movement’s name. It is frequently found over movements with a chorale-like texture — chordal motion, even values, little ornamentation.
Musical use
The designation is used in church music, in chorales and chorale settings, and in instrumental movements that strike a spiritual tone. Outside the church context too it stands over sections that are to pause and come to rest — for instance before a close or after an animated part.
The instruction is typical of German church music and of chorales, organ preludes and sacred songs. It calls for a calm tempo, even motion and a collected, inward-turned attitude. Andächtig does not mean lifeless: the music should seem sustained and dignified without dragging. In Romanticism the marking also stands in secular pieces when a solemn, prayer-like mood is meant. Italian equivalents are religioso or devoto.
Performance practice
Hold the tempo even and forgo rubato; the collectedness arises from the steadiness. Play the chords in balance, without bringing out individual notes. Keep the dynamics in the middle to quiet range and avoid intensifications unless they are notated. And allow time at the phrase boundaries without losing the pulse.
