What it means
Deciso, sometimes written decisamente, derives from the Italian verb decidere, to decide. As a performance marking it calls for a resolute, firm delivery: the music should sound clear, direct, and unhesitating, like a firm resolution being carried out.
Musical use
The marking typically appears over individual themes, phrases, or passages where a composer wants emphasis and rhythmic clarity, for instance at striking entrances or energetic motifs. It is often combined with a tempo marking, such as Allegro deciso, sharpening that tempo's character further.
Performance practice
Playing deciso calls for clear articulation and a firm, even touch or bow stroke, without becoming coarse or uncontrolled. Rhythm and accents should be placed distinctly and precisely so the resolve is audible, while tempo and dynamics remain internally stable.
