Abzugsschlag (alternating timpani stroke)
A timpani technique: a rapid alternation between the two tuned timpani pitches.
What it means
The Abzugsschlag is an older timpani stroke technique in which two differently tuned timpani are struck in rapid succession. The quick alternation between the two pitches produces a characteristic, seesawing sound effect.
Musical use
The technique was part of the traditional repertoire of Baroque and Classical timpanists, who mastered various such stroke patterns alongside the simple single stroke to achieve varied rhythmic and tonal effects. The Abzugsschlag was mostly used at striking moments, such as festive or martial passages featuring timpani and trumpets.
Performance practice
Practice the technique slowly at first, deliberately timing the alternation between the two timpani pitches evenly before increasing the tempo. Make sure both strokes stay balanced in force and tone color, so the alternating effect is clearly audible and does not sound lopsided.
